Background of the Study
Cultural exchange, facilitated by globalization and digital technology, has significant effects on language evolution. In Nigeria, traditional narratives—rich in indigenous morphosyntactic features—are increasingly influenced by digital media, resulting in hybrid linguistic forms. This study examines the impact of cultural exchange on Nigerian morphosyntax by comparing traditional storytelling with digital narratives found in blogs, social media posts, and online videos. Traditional narratives often exhibit complex word formation, clause structures, and idiomatic expressions that reflect centuries-old cultural practices (Chukwu, 2023). In contrast, digital narratives tend to simplify morphosyntactic structures for broader accessibility and faster communication, incorporating elements of global language norms (Olu, 2024). By conducting a comparative analysis, this research aims to identify the shifts in morphosyntactic patterns brought about by cultural exchange. The study investigates how the integration of digital media influences the preservation or transformation of traditional linguistic features, and the implications for cultural identity and language evolution in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024; Adebola, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing influence of digital media, there is limited research on how cultural exchange affects the morphosyntactic structures of Nigerian narratives. The transformation of traditional language forms in digital contexts may lead to the loss of culturally significant linguistic features (Chukwu, 2023). The absence of a comparative framework to analyze these changes hinders our understanding of how digital narratives are reshaping traditional morphosyntax, which is critical for preserving cultural identity (Olu, 2024; Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To compare morphosyntactic features in traditional and digital narratives.

  2. To assess the impact of digital media on traditional language structures.

  3. To provide recommendations for preserving indigenous morphosyntax amid cultural exchange.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key morphosyntactic differences between traditional and digital narratives?

  2. How does digital media influence these linguistic features?

  3. What strategies can support the preservation of traditional morphosyntax?

Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the effects of cultural exchange on Nigerian language by comparing traditional and digital narratives. Its findings will help educators, linguists, and cultural policymakers develop strategies to preserve indigenous morphosyntax while embracing digital innovation (Chukwu, 2023; Olu, 2024; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses exclusively on Nigerian narratives—both traditional and digital—and does not extend to other linguistic forms or non-Nigerian contexts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntax: The interaction of morphology and syntax in language.

  • Cultural Exchange: The process by which cultural elements are shared and integrated between societies.

  • Traditional Narratives: Oral or written stories passed down through generations.
